Oversight and Accountability

With the introduction of the Integrity and Ethics Commissioner Act 2025, the Integrity and Ethics Oversight Inspector was established to oversee the conduct of the IEC and the Office of the IEC staff.

This includes the:

  • Ombudsman
  • Information Commissioner
  • Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner, and
  • Independent Commissioner Against Corruption

The Inspector's role is to:

  • evaluate the Commissioner’s performance (as each Integrity Officer and otherwise)
  • receive and deal with complaints about the IEC (as an Integrity Officer or otherwise) or members of their staff
  • evaluate aspects of the ICAC’s operations or conduct of a member of the IEC’s staff
  • manage any actual or perceived conflict of interest involving the IEC
  • make recommendations to the Commissioner (as an Integrity Officer) regarding practices and procedures in relation to the performance of functions under the Integrity Acts.

The Inspector must be a former judge of a superior court or a lawyer with 10 or more years’ experience. The Inspector is appointed for a period of up to 5 years and may be reappointed for a further period of up to 5 years. The Inspector cannot have been the Commissioner, an Office of the IEC staff member, Auditor-General or a member of the Auditor-General’s staff in the previous 12 months.

The current Inspector is Mr Bruce McClintock SC.
